Demographics

A picture of a community’s population characteristics helps shape our understanding of important influences on health. Differences in age, gender, and race-ethnicity in a community can provide clues to causes or solutions to health outcomes. Social determinants of health are factors that have been shown to influence health. For example, people with higher incomes generally experience less disability and live longer than people with lower incomes. Higher levels of education are also associated with better health outcomes. The more education a person receives, the more they tend to display healthy behaviors and an increased use of preventive health care. Understanding the demographics of a community can shed light on local health issues.
