The Age-Friendly Honolulu Annual Report 2021-2022 prepared by the University of Hawai’i Center on Aging details the City and County of Honolulu’s progress to becoming more age-friendly.
Here are some highlights from the report:
- The Hale for Kupuna Home Adaptation for a Livable Environment booklet was created to support home modification for older adults and their families
- The Oahu Pedestrian Plan was created by the Department of Transportation Services to create safe and accessible streets. Learn more in the Executive Summary and the full plan
- The Kūpuna Food Security Coalition addressed food insecurity in older adults by serving more than 1.2 million meals in the initial eight months of the COVID-19 pandemic
- The Kūpuna Vaccination Outreach Group increased equitable access to COVID-19 vaccination
The City and County of Honolulu is a member of the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities and the American Association of Retired Person’s (AARP’s) National Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities. In 2015, the group released the visions, goals and recommendations for an age-friendly Honolulu.
The three main goals of age-friendly Honolulu are to:
- Enable people of all ages to be healthy, active, and socially engaged
- Create meaningful roles for kūpuna
- Address barriers that prevent the inclusion and accessibility for people of varying abilities
