E-cigarettes - current smoking, middle school

Summary Indicator Report Data View Options

Current e-cigarette smoking, middle school by county, 2017, 2019, 2021

Why Is This Important?

Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are battery-powered devices the give the user doses of nicotine and other additives in aerosol form. Nicotine is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development. E-cigarettes are currently unregulated by the Food and Drug Administration and have, therefore, never undergone testing for negative short- and long-term effects. Additionally, the substance that is vaporized is not regulated and may contain harmful constituents or dangerous concentrations of certain components. Use of e-cigarettes among US middle and high school students has risen substantially in the past few years. It's important to keep new tobacco products out of the hands of minors, especially those lacking valid information about short- and long-term consequences of use.
