Data Issue

Statistical Stability

Relative standard error, or RSE, is the standard error expressed as a proportion of the point estimate.

Stable is displayed when the RSE is 0.30 or less.

Unstable is displayed when the RSE is 0.31-0.50. An unstable count or rate may fluctuate widely across time periods due to random variation (chance).

Very Unstable is displayed when the RSE is greater than 0.50. A very unstable count or rate should not be used to inform decision making.

Survey Sample

The survey is conducted using scientific telephone survey methods. Both cell phones and land lines are included. Landlines in group quarters with a central phone system such as college dormitories, nursing homes, military barracks, and prisons are excluded from the sample; however, all adults contacted through their cell phones are eligible regardless of where they live. Results have been weighted to the noninstitutionalized adult population by age, sex, race, education, marital status, home ownership, telephone source (landline versus cell phone), and county of residence. See Data Release notes as the weighting has changed slightly over time.

Average Annual Population Estimate

The denominator includes all survey respondents ages 18 years and older except those with missing, don't know and refused answers. If the query was limited to a particular sub-population-group, only those respondents are included in the denominator.

Asymmetric Confidence Intervals

The confidence bounds are asymmetric. They do not extend evenly above and below the percentage, especially as the percentage gets close to 0% or 100%.
