Overview

The Birth Data is composed of variables extracted from birth certificates. State laws require birth certificates to be completed for all births. Birth certificates contain important health information about the mother, the baby, and the birth, along with demographic information about the parents. The information is captured by the Hawai'i State Department of Health, Office of Health Status Monitoring as part of the National Vital Statistics System in collaboration with the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). Birth Queries - Counts and Percentages

Birth Count
Count of all live births in a given population and time period.
Counts - Number of Births
Birth Weight
Very Low Birth Weight: Live-born infants whose birth weight was less than 1500 grams (about 3.3 lbs)
Low Birth Weight: Live-born infants whose birth weight was at least 1500 grams but less than 2500 grams (about 5.5 lbs)
Normal Birth Weight: Live-born infants whose birth weight was at least 2500 grams but less than 4000 grams
High Birth Weight: Live-born infants whose birth weight was 4000 or more grams (about 8.8 lbs)
Infant Birth Weight
- Percent of Infants Born with Low Birth Weight (all low birth weight, 0 to 2499 grams - about 5.5 lbs)
- Percent of Infants Born with Very Low Birth Weight Only (0 to 1500 grams - about 3.3 lbs.)
Infant's Gestational Age and Trimester Prenatal Care Began
As of 2014, birth record gestational age is based on obstetric estimate which is not comparable to previous data based on last menstrual period. Accordingly, prenatal and preterm birth data are provided from 2014 forward.
Prenatal Care Recommendations
It is recommended that pregnant women begin prenatal care during their first three months (first trimester) of pregnancy.

Infant's Gestational Age and Trimester Prenatal Care Began

A Preterm birth is a birth that occurs before the 37th week of gestation.

- Percent of Births That Were Preterm (all preterm, less than 37 weeks)
- Percent of Births That Were Early Preterm (less than 32 weeks)

Birth rate is the number of live births per 1,000 persons in the population.
Crude Birth Rate - Births per 1,000 Population
Fertility Rate
Fertility Rate: Live Births per 1,000 women of child-bearing age (15-44).
Fertility Rate - Births per 1,000 Women Age 15-44
Teen Birth Rate
Live births per 1,000 girls ages 15-19.
Teen Birth Rate - Births per 1,000 Girls Age 15-19
