- Counts - Number of Births
Birth Count
Count of all live births in a given population and time period.
Birth Weight
Very Low Birth Weight: Live-born infants whose birth weight was less than 1500 grams (about 3.3 lbs.)
Low Birth Weight: Live-born infants whose birth weight was at least 1500 grams but less than 2500 grams (about 5.5 lbs.)
Normal Birth Weight: Live-born infants whose birth weight was at least 2500 grams but less than 4,000 grams
High Birth Weight: Live-born infants whose birth weight was 4,000 or more grams (about 8.8 lbs.)
Infant's Gestational Age and Trimester Prenatal Care Began
In 2014, the National Center for Health Statistics changed the method of calculating gestational age from date of last menstrual period (LMP) to obstetric estimate (OE). As a result, prenatal care and preterm birth data before 2014 cannot be directly compared to data from 2014 forward.
Prenatal Care Recommendations
It is recommended that pregnant women begin prenatal care during their first three months (first trimester) of pregnancy.
