2022 Death Record Data

Just released! The 2022 Death Record data is now available for building custom reports on HHDW.org. Death Record data comes from variables extracted from death certificates collected by the Office of Health Status Monitoring (OHSM) in the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health. It includes information about the decedent, including age, sex, race/ethnicity, and cause of death. Data is available by count (number of deaths) and rate (crude and age-adjusted).

Here are a few highlights from the 2022 Death Record data in Hawaiʻi:

  • There were 13,307 deaths in 2022, with 12,855 of those deaths among residents (97.6%).
  • The leading causes of death in 2022 were diseases of the heart (2,901 deaths), followed by malignant neoplasms (2,588 deaths), cerebrovascular diseases (902 deaths), and unintentional injuries (764 deaths).
  • The crude death rate was 892.6 per 100,000 in 2022. This is higher than 865.3 per 100,000 in 2021 and significantly higher than 811.8 per 100,000 in 2020.
  • The age-adjusted death rate was 595.7 per 100,000 in 2022 and ranged from 574.8 per 100,000 in Honolulu County to 693.8 per 100,000 in Hawaiʻi County, and from 473.0 per 100,000 among females to 734.5 per 100,000 among males.
  • There were 427 deaths from COVID-19 in 2022 among Hawaiʻi residents. The age-adjusted death rate for COVID-19 was 76.7 per 100,000 persons among Other Pacific Islanders and 35.9 per 100,000 among Filipinos compared to 13.6 per 100,000 among Japanese.

Note: The population estimates used for population-based death rates come from the Census, which released updated Hawaiʻi population estimates for 2020, 2021, and 2022. Additionally, HHDW has updated the Hawaiʻi-specific race/ethnicity population estimates with new Census data from 2016-2020. Because of these updates, population-based rates may change slightly due to the new denominators.
