Age-Friendly Honolulu 2022-2023 Annual Report

The Age-Friendly Honolulu 2022-2023 Annual Report prepared by the University of Hawaiʻi Center on Aging details how City and County Departments and community-based organizations undertake initiatives to create a more age-friendly Honolulu.

The City and County of Honolulu is a member of the World Health Organization’s (WHO’s) Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities and the American Association of Retired Person’s (AARP’s) National Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities.

The three main goals of age-friendly Honolulu are to:

  • Enable people of all ages to be healthy, active, and socially engaged (p.6)
  • Create meaningful roles for kūpuna (p.6)
  • Address barriers that prevent the inclusion and accessibility for people of varying abilities (p.6)

Here are some highlights from the report:

  • As of 2021, 24% of Honolulu County’s population was age 60 and older, and is expected to increase to 29% by 2040 (p.7)
  • In 2021, 19% of older adults lived alone, an increase from 24,000 individuals in 2012 to 34,000) (p.8)
  • Among the 25 participating city departments in Honolulu, there were 267 age-friendly actions or programs implemented (pg.10)
    • Of these, 49% promoted aging in place, 25% related to increasing social engagement, and 26% related to education & outreach on age-friendly issues
