Hawaiʻi 2035 State Strategic Plan on Alzheimer’s Disease & Related Dementias

The Hawaiʻi 2035 State Strategic Plan on Alzheimer’s Disease & Related Dementias was published in September 2023 by the Executive Office on Aging at the Hawaiʻi State Department of Health. This plan serves as a guiding framework to strengthen the capacity of public, private, and community organizations to support the older adult population in Hawai‘i, especially those diagnosed with or at high risk of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD).

The Strategic Plan focuses on four strategy areas: (1) Data, (2) Program and Policy Change, (3) Public Awareness and Education, and (4) Workforce Development.

Here are some statistics on Hawaiʻi’s Medicare beneficiaries from 2010 to 2019:

  • About 14% of beneficiaries have been diagnosed with ADRD (pg. 15)
  • The prevalence of ADRD increases with age and is also higher among female beneficiaries (pg. 15)
  • Beneficiaries with ADRD have 4.3 times more inpatient stays than those without ADRD (pg. 16)
  • Medicare costs for beneficiaries with ADRD were on average $12,000 higher per year than for those without ADRD (pg. 18)
