The 2023 data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) are now available on HHDW.org and HawaiiHealthMatters.org. Explore data on health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, use of preventive services, and more in Hawaiʻi.
This year, explore 19 new indicators on HHDW.org in seven topic areas: Chronic Diseases and Conditions, Demographics, Food Insecurity, Screening and Preventive Services, Sexual Violence, Social Determinants of Health, and Substance Use. A complete list of these indicators is available in the Data Release Notes.
Here are some highlights from the 2023 data:
- 85.7% of adults ages 35-70 without diabetes who are overweight or obese, have been tested for diabetes in the past 3 years.
- 87.6% of adults have used the internet in the past 30 days. Adults ages 25-34 were most likely (96.8%), and adults ages 75+ were least likely (62.9%) to use the internet.
- More than 1 in 7 (15.5%) of individuals in households with a poverty level of 0-130% reported that they ate less than they felt they should because there wasn’t enough money for food, compared to 4.1% of individuals in a household at the 186+% poverty level.
- 15.5% of current or former smokers ages 50-80 received a CT or CAT scan in the past year. Rates vary by geography, from 17.5% in Hawaiʻi County, 17.4% in Kauaʻi County, 13.8% in Honolulu County, to 10.5% in Maui County.
- Between 2013 and 2023, the number of adults who had sex or attempted sex after they said or showed that they didnʻt want to or without their consent increased from 5.8% to 11.4%.
- 6.5% of adults reported having a lack of reliable transportation in the past 12 months. Rates vary by race/ethnicity, with Japanese (1.5%) and White (6.3%) adults having the lowest rates, and Other Pacific Islander (11.9%) and Black adults (13.2%) having the highest rates.
