2024 data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) is now available on HHDW.org and HawaiiHealthMatters.org. Explore data on health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, use of preventive services, and more in Hawaiʻi.
This year, explore our expanded Social Determinants of Health category which now includes indicators across six new sub-categories: Employment & Economic, Food Insecurity, Housing & Basic Services, Mental & Emotional Well-Being, Social Connection & Support, and Transportation Access. In total, 18 new indicators have been added this year! A complete list of the newly added indicators is available in the Data Release Notes.
Here are some highlights for the state of Hawaiʻi from the 2024 data:
From the newly expanded Social Determinants of Health category:
- 10.3% of adults have lost employment or had hours reduced in the past 12 months. Adults ages 18-24 were most likely to experience this with 18.6% reporting lost employment or reduced hours in 2024.
- 4.8% of adults had utility insecurity, where their electric, gas, oil, or water company threatened to shut off services in the past 12 months. Those in Hawaiʻi County were most likely to experience this (7.4%) while those in Maui County were least likely to experience utility insecurity (3.4%).
- More than 1 in 3 (34.4%) of adults reported feeling stress in the past 30 days.
- 32.3% of adults always, usually, or sometimes reported feeling lonely. Rates vary by age and sex, with 18-24 year old females being the most likely to experience loneliness (50.0%), while 75+ year old males were the least likely to experience loneliness (21.8%).
From some of our newly updated indicators:
- 46.5% of adults ages 45-75 years had a blood stool test within the past year.
- 9.8% of adults received food stamps, also called SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program on an EBT card in the past 12 months. Those 25-34 years old were most likely to receive food assistance (13.2%) while those 75+ were least likely to receive food assistance (4.1%).
